MEet Ufuoma Muwhen

A changemaker for those affected by sickle cell disease.

Meet Ufuoma Muwhen

Inspiring daily change to make the world a better place is a lifestyle.

I’m Ufuoma Muwhen, a girl who was diagnosed with sickle cell disease at age 2 and battled it for 16 years. Over those 16 years my family and I went through several traumatic experiences. Eventually, I reached a point when I was tired of settling in the grey area between patients and an inadequate healthcare system, especially for patients with sickle cell disease. My long journey with sickle cell pushed me to create NotJustYou—a Sickle Cell Support Organization devoted to creating support systems for individuals and families affected by the disease

As the Founder and CEO of NotJustYou, I’ve been privileged to incite and inspire change on the national stage and to a global audience. After completing my Bachelor of Science degree in both Biological Sciences and Psychology, and certificates in Interdisciplinary Leadership and Nonprofit Management from the University of Alberta, I went full time with NotJustYou and never looked back.

When I’m not fully immersed in the non-profit world, I spend time as a member of multiple public health and private sector advisory boards, helping to improve health care experiences for Black Canadians. Besides that, I’m a lover of all things enjoyment and a BIG time foodie! I find joy in cooking new recipes, trying new restaurants, and traveling to new destinations.

Living My Best Life

I believe in pursuing my passions relentlessly, whether it's through my professional endeavours, personal projects, or the small, joyful moments that make life meaningful. I make time for the things that matter most: relationships with loved ones, staying physically and mentally active, and continually learning and growing.

It’s NotJustYou.

Sickle cell disease is a group of hereditary red blood cell disorders that causes red blood cells to form into rigid, stick and crescent shapes. Many of those with sickle cell do not believe they can live full lives due to their condition, and are often left feeling discouraged from seeing any positive aspects of their disease. The mission of NotJustYou is to shed celebratory light on one’s sickle cell journey and provide a sense of hope for these individuals.
